Summary: This is a new riding for 2015. Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland, who was elected in Toronto Centre in a 2013 by-election, is seeking re-election here. She’ll face stiff competition from the NDP candidate, Jennifer Hollett, a former MuchMusic VJ who is Harvard educated, and has worked on Olivia Chow’s mayoral team. Voters in this new riding strongly supported the NDP in the last election.
Boundaries: This area was formerly represented by Toronto Centre and Trinity-Spadina. Neighbourhoods here include Moore Park, The Annex, Yorkville, and Palmerston-Little Italy.
Last Election: In 2011, voters within the boundaries of this new riding voted 43.8 per cent NDP, followed by 30.6 per cent Liberal.
History: The Toronto Centre portion of this riding has elected only Liberal MPs since 1997. The Trinity-Spadina portion was represented by NDP MP Olivia Chow from 2006-2014, and elected Liberal Adam Vaughn in a 2014 by-election.
Demographics: A riding that includes both university students and some of Canada’s wealthiest families, the average income is $71,617, third in the country—but the median income is 124th highest, at $31,854 (according to the 2011 National Household Survey).
