Summary: This is Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s riding, and both the NDP and Conservatives have put up star candidates in an effort to prevent an easy win. Both are former Radio-Canada journalists, Anne Lagacé Dowson for the NDP, and Yvon Vadnais for the Conservatives. But neither is the original candidate for this riding. Conservative Chris Lloyd stepped down in May after he revealed he only wanted to “mess” with the party as part of a performance art project (he is now running as an independent). Bétrice Zako resigned the NDP nomination in July, saying she did not want to be a distraction for the party, after comments she made comparing the Quebec sovereignty cause to the struggles African nations had for independence from European colonialism.
Boundaries: This riding has seen only a small change in boundaries for 2015. It is in the centre of Montreal island.
Last Election: Liberal Justin Trudeau was re-elected with 38.4 per cent of the vote. His nearest competitor, the NDP’s Marco Radhames Tejada, earned 28.3 per cent.
History: This riding is a Liberal stronghold and was Liberal cabinet minister Pierre Pettigrew’s riding from 1997 until 2006, when he was defeated by Vivian Barbot for the Bloc Québécois. It was the BQ’s only victory here, and Barbot was defeated by Trudeau in the next election.
