WATCH: An application is now before Vancouver City Hall to build a holiday-themed night market near Olympic Village this Christmas. Along with vendors and food trucks, there’s a proposal to build a 50,000-square-foot light maze. John Hua reports.
A new proposed Christmas event could light up Olympic Village this winter.
A development application is currently being reviewed by the City of Vancouver. The applicant, Shine Lighting Group, would not comment until the approval process was over.
City documents show that the proposed Christmas night market at West 1st Ave. and Crowe St. will run from late November to early January. It would include a 50,000-square-foot maze consisting of 496,000 LED lightbulbs.
Applicants say neighbours shouldn’t worry as the ground-level lights are supposed to be lower than the glow of B.C. Place.
Still, some neighbours say there are haunted by ghosts of Christmas events past.
Some residents claim last year’s Cavalia horse show, which used the same space last year, was so bright and noisy one person had to move out of the neighbourhood for more than a month.
Residents will have a chance to submit their comments and concerns by August 17 before the City’s Director of Planning decides whether to let the light shine or pull the plug.
