Complaints piling up over East Vancouver ‘dumping ground’

WATCH: An East Vancouver home assessed at more than $800,000 has been transformed into a public dump site in just a few months as the owner awaits demolition. Grace Ke reports.

Residents in an East Vancouver neighbourhood are speaking out after having had enough of a piece of property that’s turned into a disgusting dumping ground and eyesore.

“I don’t even want to walk my dog here because it’s so disgusting; we just avoid this street,” one neighbour told Global News.

For more than six months neighbours say garbage has been filling up the yard of an empty and dilapidated house at East 49th Avenue and Dumfries Street. People have left trash like couches, TVs, chairs, toys, tires, comforters, and massage chairs in the yard, back alley and even the sidewalk.

The rubbish, which is also attracting rodents, started being dumped on the East Vancouver property shortly after the owners moved out and slated it for demolition.

The City of Vancouver said a property inspector was sent to the home on July 28 and a notice was subsequently sent to the owner, who has until Aug. 10 to clean up the trash. If the owner does not comply, the city will send a contractor to clean the site and bill the owner for the expense. According to the city’s notice, the average cost for that type of work is roughly $3,000.

For those dumping the garbage on the property, they could face a $2,000 fine if caught.

Neighbours in the area say this is becoming a problem in the area as more homes are going to be demolished.

The city said that in 2014 they sent inspectors to 85 addresses with similar complaints.
