Westmount class action lawsuit alleges abuse may have taken place on city property

WATCH ABOVE: Lawyers trying to launch a class action lawsuit against former Westmount Parks Superintendant John Garland filed a motion to say the abuse may have taken place on city property.

MONTREAL – Former Westmount resident Matthew Bissonette filed a motion last month requesting permission to sue the City of Westmount.

He alleged that the city turned a blind eye to abuse by John Garland, the superintendent of the Westmount Parks and Recreation Department from 1953-1987.

Garland passed away in 2012.

“We initially had alleged that he lived alone in his apartment and that boys would be invited to his apartment where he lived alone,” said lawyer Annabel Busbridge.

“In fact we discovered that his mother had been living with him.”

Bisonnette’s lawyer revealed the abuse may have taken place on public property in Westmount.

The class action lawsuit alleged there may have been as many as 50 victims.
