Garbage man charged after alleged assault in Ajax, 2 cops, 1 woman injured: police

TORONTO — A 32-year-old garbage man faces multiple charges after he allegedly assaulted a 29-year-old woman and two police officers in Ajax after a dispute over recycling bins.

Durham Regional Police said the woman approached the waste collector at about 5 p.m. Thursday, to ask him to stop throwing recycling bins onto front lawns in the neighbourhood because they were being damaged.

That’s when police said the garbage man became angry and physically assaulted the woman, before continuing his route.

When two officers approached the suspect after the incident, police said he then became angry again and assaulted them as well.

The officers were able to then “gain control” of the suspect and arrested him.

The woman and two officers were taken to hospital for treatment of their undisclosed injuries.

Sheldon McPherson of Horne Avenue in Ajax faces numerous charges including assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a peace officer and causing bodily harm, assault with intent to resist arrest, assaulting peace officers and two counts of mischief.
