TORONTO — Jake Gyllenhaal said Thursday he believes in marriage and blames only himself for never having tied the knot.

The 34-year-old actor said he has been in love three times in his life. Although he didn’t identify the women, Gyllenhaal’s past relationships include Reese Witherspoon, Kirsten Dunst and Taylor Swift.

Appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Gyllenhaal explained why he never popped the question.

“Me. It was me,” he said. “I probably just got scared.”

Gyllenhaal said “at some point you just decided to grow up” and he cited his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal’s marriage to Peter Sarsgaard as an inspiration.

“They’re definitely a standard for me,” he admitted. “To me, making a relationship that’s cool, where you have kids and it feels cool… my sister and her husband make it feel that way.”

Gyllenhaal admitted he doesn’t suffer from a lack of choices.

“There are a lot of beautiful women. There are opportunities,” he said.

“I believe in monogamy. I believe in when you meet somebody who’s right, like, it will be right. You’ll stay there.”

Asked by Stern if he is currently in love, Gyllenhaal replied: “No.”

Does this make him sad?

“Yeah. Yeah, I love love, man,” he said. “Are you kidding me?”
