Canadian men’s, women’s sprint teams win gold in Pan Am track cycling

MILTON, Ont. – Canada has its first gold medals in track cycling at the Pan American Games.

Kate O’Brien and Monique Sullivan topped Cuba in 33.959 seconds in the women’s team sprint to win the second gold medal of the day at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome.

Cuba finished the head-to-head race in 34.813 while Colombia slipped past Mexico for bronze in 34.683.

Earlier, Hugo Barrette of Cap-aux-Meules, Que., Victoria’s Evan Carey and Joseph Veloce of St. Catharines. Ont., edged Venezuela in the men’s team sprint gold-medal race.

Canada finished three laps in 44.241 seconds.

Brazil edged Colombia for the bronze.
