TORONTO – Toronto Police Services Board Chair Alok Mukherjee will present a report at today’s monthly meeting to urge officers currently testing body-worn cameras to have them turned on at all times.

The year-long pilot project, which launched in May, calls for officers to turn on the cameras only during service calls and emergency situations.

However, Mukherjee, who is chairing his final meeting before stepping down from his role, is recommending the board to deploy the devices during all non-arrest, non-detention, and informal interactions with members of the community.

Mukherjee also wants the board to direct Chief Mark Saunders to conduct monthly public reports on the pilot project.

Police have assigned 100 officers to test the cameras at a cost of $500,000.
