Canada’s Ellie Black wins all-around gymnastics gold at Pan Am Games

TORONTO — Ellie Black has won Canada’s first gymnastics gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.

The Halifax native finished first in Monday’s women’s all-around artistic gymnastics event with a total score of 58.150.

Madison Desch of the United States was second with 57.450 points and Flavia Lopes Saraiva of Brazil was third with 57.050.

Black trailed Desch after the vault and uneven bars, but posted the best result in balance beam and second best in floor to overtake the American and win the event.

Isabella Onyshko of Minnedosa, Man., finished sixth out of 24 entrants. Black and Onyshko teamed up to lead Canada to silver in the team event on Sunday.
