Châteauguay residents move to overturn bylaw that bans certain dog breeds

WATCH: Châteauguay residents have launched an online petition asking the city to revisit its breed-specific legislation and refocus restrictions on dogs that show dangerous behaviour. Global’s Sarah Volstad reports.

CHATEAUGUAY – Susan Mackasey has launched an online petition asking the City of Châteauguay to revisit its breed-specific legislation and refocus restrictions to dogs that show specific, dangerous behaviour.

Right now, the city bans any breed that is pit bull-type including Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and other hybrid mixes.

“Dogs that have been properly socialized regardless of breed have the right to live and thrive in Châteauguay,” wrote Mackasey in the petition.

It has been in effect since 2005.

She started the petition after a Châteauguay man was fined $168 for owning a dog that is included in one of the breeds prohibited by the local bylaw.

He was allegedly given seven days to remove the dog from the city.
