New harbour water taxi launches in Halifax

HALIFAX – People looking for a ride across the Halifax harbour have one more way to travel today.

The new Halifax harbour water taxi service launched on Friday at noon.

Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, along with other councillors, commuted across the harbour early this morning as part of the inaugural crossing with the King’s Wharf Developer Francis Fares.

“I think when [people] get a sense of this, there’ll be a burst of excitement,” said the mayor from the water taxi this morning. “I think people will find out that for what it costs to get back and forth very quickly right from downtown to downtown is really cool. ”

The taxi service features two fully enclosed, six-passenger boats that will run across the harbour from King’s Wharf in Dartmouth to the Halifax Waterfront every 20 minutes. The taxi will also provide rides to McNabs Island on the weekends.

“It’s a pilot for us, and we are hoping there’s support, that people are using the taxis, and we’re hoping that one day it will be commercially viable for maybe to add more boats,” said Fares. “Right now we have two, but we’re hoping to add more and service communities like Bedford, Purcell’s Cove area, or Eastern Passage.”

A one-way trip on the new water taxi will cost 5.00, and takes three to five minutes.

It’s hoped that the water taxi will be used for commuting and leisure alike.

The operators hope to offer the taxi service until October.
