Bear rips into sleeping family’s tent trailer near Lake Louise

WATCH: Ashely Bayliss has a close call with nature this weekend after a bear tore into her family’s tent trailer.

CALGARY – Ashley Bayliss hadn’t been camping in the mountains since she was a little girl, but after a scary encounter on Saturday, the Sherwood Park mom says she won’t soon be back.

Bayliss says her family was camping at the Rampart Creek campground north of Lake Louise when she woke to screams from her 5-year-old son, Noah.

“We woke up and the blankets were coming out of the trailer. We didn’t see the bear but when we brought my son and my daughter over (to the other side of the trailer), the bear must have been standing up, and he was scraping on the window of the tent trailer.”

Bayliss says it was a terrifying experience. Luckily, her husband was able to scare the bear away before anyone was injured.

“I didn’t want to make any noise because I was terrified,” she said. “I was scared that if I made noise it was going to make things worse, but when he started clawing at the plastic, my husband took the initiative and just started screaming and banging on the stove. That’s essentially what saved our lives, because the bear ran away.”

Bayliss said there was no food or other materials that might have attracted bears in her trailer at the time.

According to the Parks Canada website, the Rampart Campground is currently closed to all tents and tent trailers because bears have been frequenting the campground. Anyone who sees bears in the park, is asked to report the sighting to staff by calling 403-762-1473.
