Canada’s third largest Douglas fir, Elaho Giant saved from wildfire

The Elaho Giant, believed to be Canada’s third largest Douglas fir, is still standing after a wildfire broke out in the Elaho Valley.

The fire, burning 67 kilometres west of Pemberton, is about 700 hectares in size and is now 40 per cent contained. Crews were concerned the blaze was going to destroy the huge tree, which is estimated to be at least 1,000 years old.

The District of Squamish says the Elaho wildfire has now moved through the area where the giant is located. The fire did burn intensely at the base of the tree and firefighters are still working hard to cool hotspots near the roots.

While the surface of the Elaho Giant is black at the lower base, the tree still stands and some green needles remain. Luckily, the thick bark helps Douglas firs be more resilient to fire damage.
