Promoting cycling tourism in the south Okanagan

PENTICTON – There should be no excuse for getting lost on designated bicycle routes in the south Okanagan.

The province has chosen the area for a pilot project for its new cycling tourism signage and marketing strategy.

About $100,000 will be spent for 120 route identification signs.

“This is the first of what we hope will be a province wide strategy to promote cycling tourism in B.C. and I’d like to thank the City of Penticton and the regional district for the tremendous amount of work they’ve done creating their cycling network and being advocates for cycling tourism,” says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone in news release.

The chair of the Regional District of South Okanagan says they’re very pleased the provincial government is recognizing the area’s cycling network as world class.

“People come from around the world to ride, train and race throughout the south Okanagan-Similkameen. Now, the required infrastructure will be put in place to support that interest and make it safer for everyone,” says Mark Pendergraft.

To support the area’s cycling trail network, local businesses have partnered with the City of Penticton to build a “bike hub” at the Peach Plaza.

Cyclists can use a bike pump, racks, repair tools and a water bottle filling station for free.
