Concerns over dry weather lead to revamped Celebration of Light events

WATCH: A planned fireworks festival is in trouble, after critics pointed out Metro Vancouver could be headed for one of its driest summers ever. Catherine Urquhart explains what the plan was and how it quickly changed.

A proposed countdown for the Honda Celebration of Light that would have seen 26 straight days of fireworks has been revamped due to exceedingly dry conditions in Metro Vancouver.

Earlier this week, it was announced that “pop-up” fireworks displays, lasting two to three minutes, would be a daily occurrence in various municipalities in the 25 days before the first night of the 25th anniversary of the Honda Celebration of Light.

But today, the organization announced a change of plans.

“Building on the popularity of recent scavenger hunts where you can win cash or tickets, the Honda Celebration of Light is pleased to continue the fun and bring an interactive ticket hunt to the municipalities that support the celebration. Each of the 25 days leading up to the festival, the Honda Celebration of Light will hide a “backstage pass” in one of the neighbouring municipalities. The pass gives our supporters a behind-the-scenes look at how the Honda Celebration of Light works to wow crowds every year,” they said in a statement.
