WATCH: A new poll shows dismal approval ratings for both Mayor Naheed Nenshi and city council, and while the slump comes as a surprise to some, others say it was only a matter of time. Tracy Nagai reports.
Calgarians believe the mayor and city councillors could be doing a better job, according to a new poll by Mainstreet Technologies.
Of those surveyed, only 57 per cent approve of the job Mayor Naheed Nenshi is doing.
City councillors scored lower with just a 47 per cent approval rating, and 51 per cent for city council overall.
Calgarians divided on secondary suites
The poll also surveyed Calgarians on the issue of secondary suites.
Forty-two per cent of Calgarians support widespread secondary suite reform while 37 per cent are opposed. That’s a statistical tie.
Seventy-six per cent believe secondary suite reform should be limited to inner city communities.
The poll found 70 per cent of people are following the debate.
Mainstreet Technologies surveyed 1,319 Calgarians on June 14, 2015.
No to a plebiscite
Meanwhile, Mayor Nenshi is rejecting the notion of holding a plebiscite on the issue of secondary suites.
On Monday, before the Mainstreet Technologies poll came out, Nenshi said putting the matter to a city-wide vote it would be a waste of time.
“We have done tons of surveys and we know 70 to 80 per cent of Calgarians every single time support the position when they have the right information,” said the mayor.
The issue is slated to come up again at the next council meeting on June 29.
