TORONTO — Emma Watson puts Hermione Granger well behind her in the upcoming thriller Regression, judging by a trailer released Wednesday.

The Harry Potter star plays a young woman who accuses her father (David Dencik) of a crime he has no memory of committing. With the help of a psychologist — played by David Thewlis (Harry Potter‘s Remus Lupin) — the shocking mystery unfolds.

Ethan Hawke plays the detective investigating the case.

Regression, set in 1990s Minnesota but shot last April through June in Southern Ontario, also features homegrown talent including Devon Bostick, Aaron Ashmore, Lothaire Bluteau, Adam Butcher and Kristian Bruun.

The movie was directed by Alejandro Amenábar (The Others), whose 2004 film The Sea Inside earned an Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film.

Before filming began, Watson said she was a fan of Amenábar and “really excited by the challenge my character presents to me as an actress.”

The 25-year-old has made a handful of films since the final chapter in the Harry Potter series was released in 2011. She starred in relationship drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the celebrity crime caper The Bling Ring and the biblical tale Noah.

Watson also memorably played herself in the apocalyptic comedy This Is the End opposite Canadians Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen.

The actress was a month into filming Regression when she graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.

Regression is scheduled to open in cinemas on Aug. 28.
