Bike designed for leg amputee stolen in North Kildonan

WINNIPEG — It was a bike that helped Jim Harris recover from a leg amputation and overnight Monday it disappeared.

“I was locking the back door and I noticed the back gate was open,” said Harris.

The Oakland Avenue resident then realized his shed was broken into an his bike was gone.

“Of all the bikes in there, mine was the one taken,” he said.

Harris had to get his right leg amputated below the knee because of complications with diabetes and a leg injury. He says biking was his way of staying active.

The high end road bike was customized to allow Harris to ride it comfortably.

Jim Harris’ bike was a 2013 Giant Eclipse similar to this one. Handout

“Recently I just added clip in pedals so I can ride with ease,” he said. “Two years ago I had my leg amputation and spent a lot of time recovering from it.”

The bike is valued at around $1700 and Harris has filed a police report. He believes whoever took it knew the bike’s worth.

“I’m pretty sure they saw me biking around on it,” he said. “It seems interesting several mountain bikes and a road bike were in there and it’s that bike that’s specifically stolen.

What makes him even more upset is he was planning on riding in a fundraising biking event this weekend for Luther Village camp then again for the MS Bike tour later this summer.

He hopes someone will spot 2013 Giant Eclipse bike and return it but in the meantime he will start saving money again to get a new one.
