Winnipeg police charge woman with manslaughter in St. Boniface slaying

WINNIPEG — Police have arrested and charged a 35-year-old Winnipeg woman in the slaying of an 89-year-old elderly woman in St. Boniface early Sunday morning.

Officers were called to the 400 block of Tremblay Street around 1:30 a.m. to check a woman’s well-being.

Officers located the caller within her residence in an intoxicated state at which time she was taken into custody. An injured dog was located and transported to a veterinary hospital.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident, a canvass of the area was performed. Police discovered the deceased body of an 89-year-old woman in a nearby residence.

Members of the homicide unit continued with the investigation.

Police alleged sometime between the late evening of May 16 and 1:30 a.m. on the 17 the accused, an acquaintance of the victim, entered the 89-year-old’s residence and stabbed her multiple times.

The accused then returned home, where she attacked the dog, police said.

The victim is not being identified at this time as family notifications are ongoing.

Melissa Joyce Gabriel, 35, of Winnipeg has been charged with the following for her alleged involvement:

  • Manslaughter
  • Killing or injuring other animals
  • Fail to comply with probation order x 2

She was detained in custody.
