Hungry python swallows barbecue tongs

ADELAIDE – A python has undergone surgery in Australia to remove a pair of barbecue tongs which the reptile swallowed, local media reported.

Owner Aaron Rouse said he was trying to feed Winston the python a rat using the tongs when it swallowed both of the items entirely, according to local media.

Rouse says he took the python to Dr. Oliver Funnell, a veterinary expert at the University of Adelaide to try and save his pet.

He said Funnell took some convincing that the reptile actually had the tongs stuck in its belly.

“I can remember doctor Oliver saying to me ‘now are you sure the tongs are in his belly?'”, Rouse told Channel 9. “And I said, unequivocally, ‘yes, you can read the brand name of the tongs through his skin.”

X-rays were ordered to confirm and surgery was performed taking Funnell and his team about 20 minutes to remove the metal.

Winston received seven stitches and is recovering, but will be unable to eat much for about two to four weeks, local media reported.
