A one-month-old baby girl was severely burned after her eight-year-old sibling accidentally caused a small laundry fire while playing with a lighter in northwest Toronto on Wednesday night.

Toronto Fire Services says the child sustained burns to her face, nose and arm when the fire started at an apartment on Driftwood Crt. in the Jane and Finch area.

Fire Cpt. David Eckerman says the child was breathing on her own when rushed to hospital, but he could not provide an update on her condition.

He says the baby’s sibling was playing with a lighter and accidentally set some laundry on fire.

Eckerman added that the baby’s grandmother was home at the time but was in a different area of the home.

Doctors from Sick Kids Hospital were sent to attend to the child’s location, according to the Toronto Fire Service twitter page.
