KELOWNA – Three animal cruelty related charges have been laid against a Kelowna man for allegedly neglecting his dog.
When Roland Maxson voluntarily surrendered his dog to the SPCA, staff at the Kelowna shelter were very disturbed by its condition.
SPCA spokesperson, Kathy Woodward, says the badly matted cocker spaniel was suffering ear and skin infections, advanced tooth decay and its eyes were crusted shut.
The dog, about eight years old, was taken to a veterinarian who put it down after deeming the spaniel to be in critical distress.
Maxson has been charged under the criminal code with causing unnecessary pain/suffering to an animal and failing to provide the necessaries.
He’s also been charged under provincial legislation with causing an animal to continue to be in distress.
Maxson returns to court in June after making his initial appearance Tuesday.
