Commuters will have to deal with further Groat Road closures

WATCH ABOVE: Groat Road will be closed for the next two weekends so that three damaged girders on the 102nd Avenue bridge can be removed. Shallima Maharaj has the details. 

EDMONTON –  Groat Road will be closed for the next two weekends.

The City of Edmonton has determined girders 4, 5 and 6 on the 102 Avenue bridge must be removed for repair or replacement.

The three damaged girders will be returned to the manufacturer. Further analysis will help decide if each of the girders can be repaired or must be replaced. A team of structural engineers will make the final determination.

The city says girders 1, 2 and 3 do not appear to have been damaged. Girder 7 was not damaged but will need to be moved in order for crews to safely access the others that need to be repaired.

Beginning at 7:30 pm. on Friday, May 1 until 6 am. on Monday, May 4, Groat Road will be completely closed to traffic between 107 Avenue and River Valley Road. During this time, crews will remove two girders.

A second closure will be from 7:30 pm. on Friday, May 8 until 6 am. on Monday, May 11 for the removal of the other two girders.

Parking will be banned along the east side of 116 Street between 100 Avenue and Jasper Avenue for both weekends. Parking on 109 Street between 99 Avenue and 102 Avenue will also be banned during the weekend of May 8 to 11. There will be no access to the pathway neighbouring Groat Road during the closures.
