Canada’s Pan Am Games uniforms inspired by Canadian flag

TORONTO – Team Canada’s uniforms for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games were unveiled Wednesday in Toronto, and they’re heavy on the maple leaves.

According to Liz Rodbell, the president of Hudson’s Bay – the company which designed the outfits – the uniforms were inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag and “the beauty of the maple leaf.”

The maple leaf features prominently in the collection, which contains black, white and red items. There are shorts, t-shirts, track pants and zip-up sweaters.

“When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you get a little swagger,” said Curt Harnett, Chef de Mission for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games.

“We are very very pleased with the clothing collection that is launched today,” said Gaetan Tardif, president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee.

The collection will be available starting Wednesday in Hudson’s Bay stores and online.

Canada is fielding its largest-ever Pan Am Games team of 700 athletes and has set a goal of finishing second in the medals – behind the U.S. – with 160.

Some 6,600 athletes from 41 countries will compete in 36 Pan Am sports – including 28 Olympic sports – plus 15 Parapan Am sports.

Toronto and the surrounding area will play host to the Pan Am Games from July 10-26.

The Aug. 7-14 Parapan Am Games open in exactly 100 days.
