No major injuries as small plane makes emergency landing on Highway 91

WATCH: Traffic is moving again on Highway 91 in Delta after an ultralight made an emergency landing during rush hour. As Jeremy Hunka reports, amazingly the pilot was able to walk away with just minor injuries.

A small plane crashed on the southbound lanes on Highway 91 between 64th Avenue and 72nd Avenue in Delta.

The plane landed right side up, but appeared to suffer damage upon crashing into the median.

According to Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Bill Yearwood, the ultralight plane was flying from King George Airpark when it suffered a power failure, forcing an emergency landing on the highway just before 6:15 p.m.

Miraculously, the plane managed to avoid any cars when landing, and the 49-year-old pilot, who was the sole person on board, only suffered minor injuries. He has been sent to hospital for observation.

“Looking at what happened, I’d say he did very well. It was rush hour traffic so the possibilities were very big as to what could have happened, but he was able to bring it down in a fairly controlled yet hard landing,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Peter Somerville.

While Highway 91 was closed in both directions for a short time while crews cleared debris and investigated the scene, all lanes have since reopened.

The plane, a Buccaneer II, is registered to Paul Deane-Freeman, a Delta resident. It was built in the United States in 1996 and imported into Canada in 2010.
