Repair work on Sea to Sky Highway retaining wall could cut off access to homes

WATCH: A retaining wall in West Vancouver needs repairs. For people living in the area, it means they will have no access to their homes for eight hours a day until September. And, as Catherine Urquhart reports, that has residents very concerned.

A retaining wall on the Sea to Sky Highway is set to undergo repairs, approximately five years after the roadway underwent a major renovation.

About 100 residents were told last week that they won’t be able to use Pasco Rd. from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the repairs. Work on the retaining wall is expected to last into September.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Repairs were set to begin on April 27, but they have been delayed after residents complained that the remedial work will severely restrict access to their homes.

“On one side of their mouths, they’re saying that there’s no issue here to be concerned about,” says resident Jan Easton. “There’s nothing pressing. A wall isn’t going to fall down. But we have no other way out to the street. There’s no exit in the north direction towards Squamish and we just have the one exit towards Horseshoe Bay. We’re kind of on the edge of this cliff and I don’t know how we’re going to leave here.”

The Ministry of Transportation said in an email to Global News:

“There are no safety concerns for the residents of Pasco Road…The Ministry is exploring some mitigative works to the internal structure…to help improve the long term performance of this infrastructure.”

Residents are asking for night-time road closures to minimize disruptions, a compromise that may allow the work to go ahead and give residents better access to their homes on Pasco Rd.
