Protesters greet Indian PM Narendra Modi as he visits Vancouver, Surrey

WATCH: Security was especially tight around Metro Vancouver today as thousands of people, including protestors, turned out to see India’s visiting Prime Minister. Catherine Urquhart reports.

VANCOUVER – Hundreds of protesters gathered at Vancouver International Airport, the Ross Street Temple in Vancouver and the Laxmi Narayan Hindu temple in Surrey ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

An organization posted a video saying one person was arrested at the Ross Street Temple, but that has not been confirmed by Vancouver Police.

Groups of protesters gathered along the roadways, waving signs and chanting. Some signs read “communal fascist Modi, go back.” Another reads “butcher not welcomed.”

They are calling Modi a terrorist and say he has blood on his hands from a 2002 massacre of Muslims in Gujarat State, when Modi was chief minister.

There is also anger over the deal signed Wednesday for India to buy more than 3,000 tonnes of Canadian uranium to fuel India’s power reactors.
