The sound that could be very lucrative for a radio listener if they can finally identify it. Jennifer Palma explains.
It’s a sound that has been making local radio listeners crazy–and could make one person a lot of money.
Radio station Z95.3 is offering thousands of dollars to the person who can correctly identify a mystery sound.
It turns out that’s easier said than done. Listeners have been trying to figure out this particular sound since March 6. So far, there have been more than 130 incorrect guesses.
This is the third time the station has held the Z-FX contest and the jackpot currently stands at a record-high $34,000.
“There were a lot of Slurpee machine guesses,” says Z95 host Ruby.
Other guesses include a paper shredder, bug zapper, bicycle air pump and dot matrix printer.
The mystery sound appears to be good for the station’s bottom line, guaranteeing market share and keeping ad streams flowing.
“We want to invite people to the party and then give them a reason to listen longer,” says promotions director Crosby McWilliam.
Not surprisingly, Z95 staff are tight-lipped about the mystery sound. They did, however, offer this clue: “The Z-FX has nothing to do with public transit.”
