NHL playoff bets underway in Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa

CALGARY – Jerseys, flags, beer and Beavertails: There are two days before the first round match-ups in the 2015 NHL playoffs, and so far three Canadian mayors are looking to wager some bets.

The Calgary Flames will face the Canucks at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena Wednesday night 8 p.m. MT to open the best-of-seven series, and Mayor Naheed Nenshi is asking for help on what to “ask” for from Vancouver “since” the Flames will win.

Mayor Nenshi said Monday afternoon he needed ideas on “what in the world I might possibly want from Vancouver.”

There had been no online response from Mayor Gregor Robertson as of Monday evening, but ideas from those on social media included a case of B.C.’s Granville Island beer, donations to local food banks, and “mild winters.”

In the eastern conference, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre have agreed on what’s at stake in the series between the Senators and Habs, “after some hard-fought negotiation.”

According to a release from Mayor Watson’s office, the terms are:

  1. The losing city’s Mayor will wear the winning team’s jersey to a City Council meeting
  2. The losing city’s Mayor will fly the winning team’s flag at City Hall for a week
  3. If Ottawa wins, Mayor Coderre will send Montreal smoked meat to Mayor Watson
  4. If Montreal wins, Mayor Watson will send Beavertails to Mayor Coderre
