TORONTO – York Regional Police have announced Tuesday the seizure of $1 million worth of stolen clothing after dismantling a Greater Toronto Area shoplifting ring.
Police say the investigation began in October 28, 2014 following a clothing store theft at Markville Mall in Markham.
Security video obtained at the scene helped police identify several suspects linked to similar crimes in the area.
Investigators say the suspects stole clothing from multiple retailers inside malls across the GTA and five people were subsequently arrested on March 19.
A search warrant conducted on the same day resulted in the clothing seizure from a Toronto residence.
Thuy Nguyen, 48, Seng Pring, 41, Thi Nguyen, 34, Phuoc Dang, 55 and Tu Chao, 44, all from Toronto face a total of 19 charges including theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and trafficking in property obtained by crime over $5,000.
