Suspicious package found in Vancouver forces evacuation of nearby buildings

Sergio Magro / Global News

VANCOUVER –  A suspicious package found in Vancouver closed part of Hornby street Monday morning.

Vancouver Police (VPD) say at about 10:30 a.m. they responded to the 1000-block of Hornby Street after a person reported seeing a suspicious package in a planter.

The VPD Explosive Disposal Unit was called to assess the situation. Investigators have now found that the package appeared to be a replica explosive device, but did not constitute a threat to anyone’s safety.

The item has now been removed and police will be attempting to determine how the package was left in the planter.

Hornby Street, between Helmcken Street and Nelson Street, was closed for more than an hour and some nearby buildings and residences were evacuated for safety. The streets have now been reopened, but police are not saying what the device was at this time.
