WATCH: Montreal students protest austerity

MONTREAL – Thousands of student protesters gathered in downtown Montreal Saturday afternoon.

It was the latest in a string of demonstrations against government austerity measures announced last year.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Organizers said they did not provide a route to police, which made the event illegal under municipal bylaw P-6 but immediate measures were not taken to stop the demonstration.

Student group ASSÉ claims more than 50,000 students will go on strike starting Monday.
