New seniors home for residents of Raymond

Seniors in Raymond will soon have a new place to call home. The federal and provincial governments have announced a joint investment on $7.5-million for a new, 40-unit affordable seniors housing complex. It will replace the current Ridgeview Lodge.

Lillian Baldry and Carol Shaw are best friends who live at the Lodge.

“I was so thrilled. I’m 91 and don’ t know if will live long enough to live in, but I want to,” smiled Shaw.

Chairman Tom Butler says the community needs the new facility. Ridgeview was built in 1960, and is now outdated.

“The rooms here are around 128 to 130 square feet and when it’s completed, they’ll be closer to 400 to 500 square feet,” Butler adds.

Seniors who grew up in Raymond say having the opportunity to stay close to family is the best medicine for happiness.

“Seniors have built their lives in these communities and they often have had to leave town when it’s time to go into senior housing and this announcement is great because it allows people to stay in the town that they grew up in,” said Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer.

Construction on the new complex is expected to begin in the spring or early summer.
