HALIFAX – The Halifax Regional Municipality’s decision to impose a sweeping on-street parking ban in the wake of yet another winter storm has left some of the city’s residents scrambling to make new arrangements.
A handful of businesses and lot owners throughout the city have come forward to offer temporary free parking to motorists looking for a spot to avoid being towed or fined:
- Halifax Shopping Centre – Parking permitted in covered underground parking areas, but people are being asked not to park on the upper decks due to snow removal operations.
- Scotia Square – limited quantity of passes available that expire on March 21 at midnight; can be picked up at client services immediately after parking.
- CFB Halifax – free parking available Thursday at HMC Dockyard and near the Military Family Resource Centre at Windsor Park.
- Dalhousie Unviersity – Dalplex lot and Hancock lot (corner of Oxford Street and Coburg Road) available for free use on Thursday; cars must leave by 6 a.m. Friday.
- Dartmouth Sportsplex – lot available for free parking once it’s cleared of snow.
- Halifax Waterfront Development – Parking available at several lots downtown.
Late Thursday afternoon, Halifax Stanfield International Airport confirmed that no parking was available in its lots and people who have flights booked should use a shuttle service or taxi to reach the airport.
Note: the list above is only a partial list and was current as of 4 p.m. Thursday. There might be other lots with free parking available.
