EDMONTON — Albertans hoping to take a direct flight to Amsterdam this spring are going to have wait a few weeks longer.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines released a statement on Wednesday saying its new route from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Edmonton International Airport has been delayed by two weeks due to collective bargaining with its employees. The inaugural flight was set to take off on May 5, but is now scheduled for May 19.

KLM said it is contacting passengers who already booked flights between the 5th and 19th, to figure out alternative options. Possibilities include rebooking via alternate routes or dates, or refunding tickets.

“We regret this delay and, together with Edmonton International Airport, remain fully committed to a successful launch of the Edmonton-Amsterdam route,” said Jean-Noel Rault, Vice President and General Manager, AIR FRANCE KLM Canada.

In November, the airline announced it was planning to offer a non-stop flight three times a week, starting May 5, and would increase frequency to four times a week by June 22.

“Ever since announcing the addition of Edmonton to our worldwide network, we have experienced a very positive feedback from the market and an unwavering support from the Edmonton and Northern Alberta communities,” Rault added.

KLM said if more delays happen because of the bargaining, it will take further measures to limiting the inconvenience felt by passengers.
