Pedestrian dead after hit and run in Surrey; police searching for vehicle

WATCH: Police are appealing to the public to help find a truck driver who struck and killed a homeless man. Jill Bennett reports.

The video footage from a nearby security camera is disturbing to watch.

In the middle of the night, a man slowly pushes a shopping cart along the shoulder of Bridgeview Drive in Surrey. Out of nowhere, a semi-trailer comes from behind, veers out of the lane and hits the man.

The driver continues, not slowing down, perhaps not even knowing they hit someone. The man, still in the frame, is rushed to hospital but dies a short time later.

Surrey RCMP are looking at that video as they investigate the hit and run, which happened Wednesday morning around 3:30 a.m. Surrey RCMP and BC Coroner’s Service are still trying to identify the victim, described as an adult male in his 30s or 40s, along with the semi-trailer. But they’re optimistic that the security footage, taken by Central City Brewing Company, will help them find the person driving the vehicle.

“We’ll look at that video, we’ll analyze it, we’ll enhance it and see what we can do,” says Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr.

“Quite frankly, a vehicle travelling at that time of the morning in that area is likely associated to a company. Often times companies have a specific colour, so they may recognize the vehicle and come forward.”

Anyone with information about the incident, the identity of the victim or the suspect vehicle is asked to call the Surrey RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
