#ThisSucksYVR hopes to inspire residents to vote yes in transit plebiscite

WATCH: The debate over the upcoming TransLink plebiscite is heating up. As Ted Chernecki reports, one of the groups with the most at stake stepped forward for the ‘yes’ side.

VANCOUVER – There is a video spreading on social media today called ‘This Sucks Vancouver’.

The people behind the video are promoting the ‘Yes’ side in Metro Vancouver’s transit plebiscite. They say residents need to vote yes and support a 0.5 per cent tax increase to pay for new transit projects.

“Getting around sucks,” says Jorah Porteous, star of the video and co-founder of the ‘This Sucks Vancouver’.

“It’s frankly quite a bit silly that we’re even having to vote and we’re having this whole talk to be honest. I mean, there’s not really a viable alternative. It’s pretty clear to me.”

Porteous says himself and a few friends were getting annoyed by the current state of transit and the traffic in Vancouver and wanted to get the message out to enact change.

“It’s just a group of friends, I don’t even really consider myself an activist. I’m just a guy from Vancouver, like anyone else, and one of our favourite pastimes, as Vancouverites, is to complain so I figured I might as well chirp in there a bit,” says Porteous.

He says, in his opinion, it is a “no-brainer” to vote yes.

“I don’t like TransLink either,” says Porteous. “A lot of people focusing on the TransLink thing, but what we’re actually talking about is transportation infrastructure, you know? We’re talking about bridges and roads. As well as transit, buses, SkyTrains, light rail, I mean, it’s a whole package.”
