WATCH: Colorado man’s dog mistakenly adopted by other family

A man in Denver, Colorado is pleading for the return of his beloved dog Chewbacca.

The chow mix was mistakenly adopted by a family while Chewbacca’s owner Korey Wetherell was out of town.

The entire mishap began March 1 when Wetherell was informed that his four-year-old dog had gotten loose while he was out of town.

After posting a lost dog ad on Craigslist, Wetherell discovered that Chewbacca was at the Denver Animal Shelter.

Wetherell says he spoke to the shelter who assured him that the dog was fine and that he would be able to pick him up.

Still out of town, Wetherell sent a friend to pick up the dog who was told that Chewbacca had already been adopted by another family.

“I had no idea your dog could be taken and put up for adoption,” Wetherell told 9 News.

Wetherell wishes that he had been warned that he needed to come in as soon as possible to pick up Chewbacca before he was adopted.

He has been appealing to the public on social media for help in getting Chewbacca back.

Denver Animal Shelter says they are trying to help resolve the situation, but according to a tweet early Monday, the dog was still not returned to its rightful owner.

Wetherell doesn’t blame the shelter for their mistake but hopes Chewbacca will be home with him soon.
