Police chief: 19-year-old fatally shot by veteran Wisconsin officer was unarmed

MADISON, Wis. – Madison’s police chief says the 19-year-old man who was shot and killed by an officer was unarmed.

Chief Mike Koval also said Saturday that the officer who shot Tony Robinson was previously involved in a shooting but was cleared of any wrongdoing because it was a “suicide by cop-type” situation.

Koval identified the officer as 45-year-old Matt Kenny and said he has more than 12 years of experience. The previous officer-involved shooting was in 2007.

Kenny is on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation by the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation and the Dane County District Attorney’s decision on whether to press charges.

Police say Kenny shot Robinson on Friday night after Robinson assaulted the officer. Koval said it wasn’t clear whether Robinson was alone.
