TORONTO – The construction of the Spadina subway line extension from Downsview Station up to Vaughan in York Region is $400 million over budget, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

The newspaper cites sources saying the ballooning cost will now be hundreds of millions more expensive and most likely delayed as well.

The original price tag was pegged at $1.5 billion but was later re-estimated to $2.6 billion.

The 8.6-kilometre extension was also supposed to open later this year but the subway trains may not even hit the tracks until at least 2017.

The cost of the extension has been split three ways between the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
