EDMONTON – Activity seekers wanting more information on Edmonton’s recreation centres have two new tools at their disposal: a customizable online program guide, and a mobile app.
On Tuesday the City of Edmonton launched its Recreation Centres mobile app for Android and Apple devices. The app allows users to look up a wide range of information about the city’s 18 recreation centres, including locations, hours of operation and schedules.
Users can view all available programs throughout the centre, or narrow their options down to instructor or activity. The activity category is further separated into aquatic fitness, dryland fitness, lane swim and sports activities categories.
Users can create a personalized list of drop-in programs from the over 300 available each week. The app lets users add classes and reminders to the calendar on their phone.
The app also contains a fitness tracking survey intended to help developers make improvements, as well as an option to submit feedback.
“City recreation centres and programs are very important to the daily lives of Edmonton families,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “By offering an intuitive online search and registration process and easier access to timely information through mobile devices, we will enhance people’s recreation experience and build a more active city.”
The city also launched My Rec Guide, an online tool in which you can create personalized program guides based on your interests, age and facility choice. The easy, three-step process allows users to narrow down a long list of programs to include only the things they want.
The app and online tool are part of the Open City initiative: a plan to use innovative methods to connect citizens with information, programs and services.
