New Jersey declares state of emergency ahead of winter storm

TORONTO – Another winter storm is bearing down on the northeastern United States.

The U.S. National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories across a large swath of the country as a large weather system descended across an area that extended from New Mexico to New York state.

In New Jersey, governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency.

The National Weather Service said that moderate to heavy rain will extend from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic, which, combined with snow melt could result in flash flooding or floods.

As temperatures drop overnight the precipitation will turn to freezing rain from Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley. Continuing northeast, it will fall as sleet, freezing rain and heavy snow. Some areas could see anywhere from 15 to 30 centimetres of snow.
