Almost five years to date since the 2010 Winter Olympic Games wrapped up in Vancouver, the majority of people in our province still look back fondly at that moment in our history.

According to a new Insights West poll, 69 per cent think it was “definitely” or “probably” worth it to hold the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Meanwhile, one in four believe the experience was not worth it.

Even though it took the city of Vancouver over four years to pay off its $630 million Olympic debt, 80 per cent believe the 2010 Games had a positive effect on the city.

However, most are not supportive of the idea of Vancouver hosting the Summer Olympics. Fifty-three per cent believe Vancouver should not launch a bid to host the Summer Games, but just over a third would welcome a proposal.

Respondents were also asked to name their favourite memory of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

Three in ten mentioned the feeling of pride and camaraderie during the games and 25 per cent recalled one or both of the hockey gold medals won by Team Canada.

Other Olympic moments that were mentioned include the opening and closing ceremonies, the torch relay and lighting of the cauldron, the weather and the victories of Canadian athletes Alexander Bilodeau in freestyle skiing and Jon Montgomery in skeleton.
