Iran’s Revolutionary Guard begins military exercises near strategic strait

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has begun large-scale naval and air defence drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

State TV showed the Guard’s speedboats swarming a replica of a U.S. aircraft carrier and a drone being shot down. It showed the firing of four missiles, three of which hit the carrier.

The drill, named Great Prophet 9, was held near the Strait of Hormuz, a major international waterway through which one fifth of the world’s oil passes. Iran’s regular army carried out naval drills near the strait in December.

Iran and world powers are currently negotiating a final agreement over the country’s contested nuclear program.
