Lake Country voters reject borrowing money for rail corridor purchase

LAKE COUNTRY- The District of Lake Country will review its options after voters rejected a proposal to borrow money to buy the section of the abandoned CN Rail line that runs through the community.

In an alternative approval process, 960 qualified electors signed a petition opposing plans to borrow up to $2.6 million for the land purchase. The minimum number of signatures required to kill the borrowing proposal was 931.

The district council was hoping to buy the section of the rail line so it could become a recreational corridor.

Council will again address the issue at its Tuesday night session.  It’s possible a referendum will be held to again seek approval to borrow the money.
