NHL trades: Habs deal Sekac to Anaheim for Smith-Pelly

MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens traded rookie winger Jiri Sekac to the Anaheim Ducks for right-winger Devante Smith-Pelly on Tuesday.

Smith-Pelly, 22, had five goals and 12 assists in 54 games and averaged 14:38 of ice time for the Ducks this season.

The six-foot-two, 222-pound native of Mississauga, Ont., has 14 goals and 26 assists in 129 regular-season games since making his debut with Anaheim in 2011-12. He was drafted 42nd overall in 2010.

He helped Canada win bronze at the 2012 world junior championship.

Sekac, 22, signed as a free agent with Montreal on July 1 after fielding offers from several NHL teams. The quick, skilled winger from Kladno, Czech Republic, had seven goals and nine assists in 50 games, averaging 13:48 of ice time per game.

Sekac was impressive early in the season, but has not scored and has only two assists in 21 games since Dec. 29. He was made a healthy scratch twice last week before playing in Montreal’s last three games.
