SASKATOON – It was a romantic end to Valentine’s Day for couples who caught the sunset Saturday. The skies cleared up long enough for people in Saskatoon to catch a glimpse of a spectacular set of sun dogs setting over the Saskatchewan horizon.

The miraculous sunset was caught by Global’s skycam on top of the Radisson Hotel in downtown Saskatoon.

According to Environment Canada, sun dogs are luminous spots of light appearing of either side of the sun when its rays shine through ice crystals floating in the air. This illusion is also known as parhelia or mock suns.

Saturday’s sun dogs occurred after a day full of winter weather warnings in the area where approximately nine to 15 centimetres of snow fell.
