IHIT investigating death of a 3-year-old girl in Surrey

File / Global News

A three-year-old girl from Surrey has died and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are investigating.

According to IHIT spokeswoman Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, the girl was rushed to hospital from her home in the 5800 block of 182nd street on Wednesday, February 11, but later died from her undisclosed injuries. They say the death is suspicious and doesn’t appear to be a random event. They’re working with Surrey RCMP to figure out what led to her death.

“Any time we investigate a suspicious death we treat it very seriously,” says Ashton. “We ask that the public keep in mind a child has died and her family is now dealing with that death.”

What exactly happened in the home is unclear, but Ashton says that the original 911 phone call was just for medical services, but quickly became a police investigation based on what doctors and medical staff found.

IHIT has been involved in the case since Wednesday, but only took over the investigation upon the child’s death. They say it could take some time to determine what happened and if charges will be laid.

“There’s something about this that doesn’t make sense. The hardest part for the public, and for us, is that it can take days for us to find out what that really means,” said Ashton.

“Sometimes something that’s suspicious turns out not to be, and sometimes it turns out that it is.”

There are no suspects at this time, but witnesses are being interviewed. Anyone with information is asked to call Surrey RCMP.
