Canadians a big part of ‘Saturday Night Live’ for 40 years

'Saturday Night Live' will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a prime time special on Feb. 15.

TORONTO — Canadians Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short and Norm Macdonald are among the former Saturday Night Live stars returning for the show’s 40th anniversary special.

Also taking part in the three-hour prime time special on Feb. 15 is Canada’s Jim Carrey.

The reunion will also include SNL alumni Jimmy Fallon, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler, Dana Carvey, Kristen Wiig, Chris Rock, Garrett Morris, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis, David Spade and Fred Armisen.

A number of former hosts and musical guests are also scheduled to be part of the special: Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Alec Baldwin, Kerry Washington, Emma Stone, Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Melissa McCarthy, Robert DeNiro, Paul Simon, Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, Jack Nicholson, Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks, Betty White, Jon Hamm, Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd and James Franco.

Saturday Night Live was created by Toronto’s Lorne Michaels and debuted in 1975.

Its cast has included at least seven Canadians: Ottawa-born Dan Aykroyd (1975-79) and Peter Aykroyd (1979-80), Brantford, Ont.’s Phil Hartman (1986-94), Quebec City’s Norm Macdonald (1993-98), Ottawa-born Mark McKinney (1995-97), Toronto’s Mike Myers (1989-95), and Hamilton, Ont. native Martin Short (1984-85).

A number of Canadians have made cameos on SNL, including Toronto’s Will Arnett, Kapuskasing, Ont. native James Cameron, Springdale, Nfld.-born Natasha Henstridge, Winnipeg’s Chantal Kreviazuk, Hamilton, Ont. native Eugene Levy, Toronto’s Owen Pallett and Sudbury-born Alex Trebek.

Toronto artist The Weeknd performed with musical guest Ariana Grande on SNL‘s 40th season premiere.

Over the years, dozens of Canadians have appeared on the show as hosts or musical guests.

Hosts from north of the border have included stars from seven provinces and one territory: Neve Campbell (Sudbury, Ont.); John Candy, Jim Carrey, Drake (Toronto); Michael J. Fox (Edmonton); Tom Green (Pembroke, Ont.); Wayne Gretzky, Phil Hartman (Brantford, Ont.); Margot Kidder (Yellowknife); Pam Anderson (Ladysmith, B.C.); Eric McCormack, Rick Moranis (Toronto); Norm Macdonald (Quebec City); Mike Myers (Toronto), Leslie Nielsen (Regina); Catherine O’Hara (Toronto); Ellen Page (Halifax); Jason Priestley, Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogen (Vancouver); Paul Shaffer (Thunder Bay, Ont.); William Shatner (Montreal); Martin Short (Hamilton, Ont.); Dave Thomas (Toronto) and Nia Vardalos (Winnipeg).

Brendan Fraser, Matthew Perry and Kiefer Sutherland — who were born outside Canada but grew up in the country — have also hosted.
